I originally heard about Market Samurai as a keyword research tool, but it is so much more than that.  The software is currently in beta, and new features and updates are being released on a weekly basis.  I’ll be writing a full review in the next week or so, but to give you a run-down of what this tool can do right now, here is a list:

8. Adwords – this module has not been released yet.

For the last 8 months or so I have been on a diet.  Long hours sitting at a desk all day had added inches to my waist line, so I decided to do something about it.  Besides increasing my activity levels, I also went on a diet, or rather a lifestyle change.  This new way of eating has helped me not only lose weight, but keep it off.

I remember hearing someone talking about a cake diet, and wondered if one actually existed and also if there was a demand for this phrase. I thought that if people were searching for a cake diet, I could promote this diet to them since although not technically a cake diet, the diet did let you eat cake or any other treat you wanted – in fact the diet demands you do.

I opened up Market Samurai.

Market Samurai offers a wealth of information about your keyword data, but one piece of the jigsaw that causes a lot of confusion is PBR.  This stands for Phrase-to-Broad match Ratio.

Market Samurai’s PBR is a really useful metric for analyzing what people actually search for.  You can think of PBR as a confidence level if you like, ie how confident are you that people actually search for a particular phrase?  The higher the PBR, the more confident you can be that people are actually searching for that phrase with the words in that particular order.

e.g. Market Samurai tells me that the phrase “chocolate cake diet” only has a PBR of 13%, meaning very few people actually search for that particular phrase.

In fact, as you look through the “cake diet” data, it looks like more people are actually searching for “diet cake” recipes rather than a specific diet where you eat cake!

The Market Samurai SEO Competition module is extremely powerful in helping you decide on phrases that are worth your efforts to optimize.  The tool will show you your SEO competition, and tell you what you need to do to beat that competition. 

The Market Samurai SEO Competition module will show you a snap shot of the top 10 ranked websites for any phrase, with a breakdown of both on-page and off-page factors.  You can then dig deeper into the rankings if you wish, but looking at Page Rank of the pages linking to your competitors as well as the anchor text inbound links use.

In my last Market Samurai tutorial, I showed you how great Market Samurai is at finding & evaluating micro niches. I have had a lot of requests for a tutorial showing a more in-depth keyword research using Market Samurai. In this tutorial I’ll look for a niche in the fitness area, and then once I have decided on the niche, I’ll show you how to go about identifying phrases to use within that niche (as well as how to structure your site).

There are a number of Micro Niche Finder tools out there, with perhaps the best known being Micro Niche Finder.  More recently, Jonathan Ledger has come out with the excellent Niche Horde.  However, with money being tight, it would be nice if you could rely on just one keyword tool.  Well, Market Samurai might just be that tool.  I use it to research large sites, and I use it to research micro niche sites. In this tutorial I want to share with you my technique for narrowing down a niche into a micro niche, and evaluating it to see if it would be worth targeting for a mini-adsense site.  Feel free to leave a comment at the end of this page.
